Abstract

Every software development team has incentives that include quality metrics. Every outsourcing contract includes acceptance criteria that reature quality metrics. Unfortunately, there are too many metrics, not enough automation, and insufficient standards for static code analysis — even though there are myriad other related uses (like software modernization and systems assurance) for the same underlying infrastructure. The Consortium for IT Software Quality (CISQ), a group of software developers and users led by Object Management Group (OMG) and CMU’s Software Engineering Institute (SEI), are developing a fully automatable, internationally-adopted standard to lower costs and increase quality broadly in the software world, driven by static code analysis, software modeling and shared patterns and anti-patterns of good practice. Dr. Soley will given an overview of the OMG’s international standards process and focus areas, with particular focus on the CISQ standards development project, and the expected uses of of the standard when complete.

Dr. Richard Mark Soley is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Object Management Group, Inc. (OMG®) and Executive Director of the SOA Consortium. As Chairman and CEO of the OMG, Dr. Soley is responsible for the vision and direction of the world’s largest consortium of its type. Dr. Soley joined the nascent OMG as Technical Director in 1989, leading the development of OMG’s world-leading standardization process and the original CORBA® specification. In 1996, he led the effort to move into vertical market standards (starting with healthcare, finance, telecommunications and manufacturing) and modeling, leading first to the Unified Modeling Language (UML®) and later the Model Driven Architecture (MDA®). He also led the effort to establish the SOA Consortium in January 2007, leading to the launch of the Business Ecology Initiative (BEI) in 2009. The Initiative now includes Communities of Practice focused on the adoption of BPM and SOA, Green Computing, Event Processing and Cyber Security. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A., Dr. Soley holds the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
